| Introduction to Injury Risk Management (SESC9241)
This is an innovative course on injury prevention focusing on a broad multidisciplinary approach to risk management. The objective of the course is to explore the concepts in injury risk management with particular respect to understanding how injury occurs and how injury differs from other public health problems. The course covers:

What is injury? The size of the problems and different ways of counting injury.

Introduction to the concepts of risk, risk assessment and risk management. Quality and safety, hazards and risks and the role of risk perception.

Theories and approaches to injury causation. Covers public health, road safety and risk management theories of injury causation.

Injury surveillance covers sources of injury data, injury coding and classification and introduces ICD coding of injury mechanism, nature and agency as well as the limitations of population databases.

Approaches to injury intervention policy and intervention and the role of regulation.

Introduction to human factors and injury

Injury risk management in the real world.
The course involves five consecutive days and is conducted in July each year. It is a university accredited course counting as six units of credit towards postgraduate qualifications. It is also offered as a Non-Award programme for non UNSW students.
