Summary
The project investigated parental perceptions of the risk of sports injury to their children in Victoria. The project aimed to investigate the influence and extent of parental perceptions of sports injury risk as a barrier to young people's participation in sport. To explore the influence of these perceptions, the project was conducted in 2 phases: a quantitative survey of parents and a follow-up quantitative phase where selected parents were interviewed concerning their perceptions of sports injury risk. Overall, the findings of both phases of the project supported that parents acknowledged and were aware of the injury risk of participation in sport and between different sports. However, parental perceptions of sports injury risk did not appear to be strong influences of parental actions regarding sports participation.
