Julie Hatfield

Senior Research Fellow

PhD (Psychology), University of Sydney , 2000
Hons (Psychology, Class I), University of Sydney , 1996
BA, University of Sydney , 1994

Julie conducts research in the field of road safety. Her behavioural research (including field surveys and observations) has improved our understanding of drivers’ risk perception, and its relationship to risky driving (particularly drink driving, speeding, and driving whilst fatigued). Her driving simulator research has included investigation of the effects of distraction (e.g. mobile telephone use) on driving. She has also developed and employed field research methodologies to investigate pedestrian and cyclist road safety. Julie has established an ongoing research program that aims to develop and refine messages for learner drivers that will reduce their risky driving behaviour.
